Hiro Kurata
In Melted City (paper works on paper), ten artists based in Philippines,
United States, Japan, and Canada come together to present modest-sized paper works in 2D. Curated by New York artist and teacher Jordin Isip and Manila artist Louie Cordero, Melted City continues their collaborative relationship sparked off in 2001 that takes the route of developing artist networks to facilitate exchange and dialogue between those of varied backgrounds and inclinations. The show is a melting pot of sorts; it is also about fostering fraternity and systems of support in practice, exploring
possible connections and conversations between artists who are
building an involving and intriguing relationship with paper.
Victor Balanon is a self-taught artist who has worked as an
illustrator creating artworks for film, independent comics and
underground music labels. He later studied film and animation at the
Mowelfund Film Institute while creating a self-published comic-book
anthology and working on his serialized pen and ink drawings. He has
had various solo and group showings ever since, both locally and
abroad, while holding a day job as a (hand-drawn) key animator. He
lives and works in Quezon City, Philippines.
Patrick Cruz is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in
Vancouver BC. He attended University of the Philippines Fine Arts and
Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Over the past few years Cruz
has investigated the aesthetics and potentialities of image making
through social networking. Recent solo showings include Yin Yang
Temple (2011), Unit/Pitt; Maybe Attending (2011), Freie Internationale
Tankstelle; Forecast Situation (2011), Lucky’s Gallery; Carapace
(2010), Hammock Residency Program.
Robert Gutierrez was born in 1972 in Manila, Philippines. He has had solo exhibitions at Torri & Geminian, Milan (2005, 2008); SixtySeven Gallery, New York (2006) and Richard Heller Gallery, Santa Monica (2010). His work was also included in group shows at Deitch Projects, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Weatherspoon Art Museum, Kemper Museum of Art and in the museum exhibition, Panic Room, which was organized by the Deste Foundation forContemporary Art, Athens, Greece. His work is in the permanent collection of the New Museum, New York and the Berkeley Art Museum. He will present his upcoming project RolePlay Colonial in the dungeons of Casal Solleric in Mallorca this coming June.
Hiro Kurata was born in Japan in 1980. The main focus in his paintings
are allegorical scenes of modern hero figures using motifs from
baseball culture. He is currently living in Brooklyn, New York.
Born in 1971, Rob Leecock rose to young manhood in the fetid
backwaters of the New Jersey shoreline. He scanned the barren terrain
for righteous ammunition with which to load his artistic blunderbuss.
He found it in comic books and album covers. He found it in paperback
books, movie posters and the psychic dystopia of teenage life. His
chosen weapons are graphite and oils, although if he dipped his stylus
in poison, fear, or blood, the results would be the same. A
deceptively simple vision of idealized notions and accentuated forms.
Matt Leines is a New York based artist. Leines' finely detailed
paintings and drawings are an amalgam of memories, filtered influences
from the long and varied histories of art and culture, and life's
obsessions. The emphatically meticulous lines speak to a primitive,
yet undeniably modern aesthetic. His work has been showcased in
exhibitions and collections across the globe and his first monograph,
You Are Forgiven, was published by Free News Projects in 2008.
Jacob Lindo born in 1985, Manila, drawn into things that feed his
curiosity like obscure movies and thought-provoking pieces of
literature. He attended Far Eastern University (Philippines), majoring
in design. At present, he keeps himself busy by tinkering on forms
like drawing, collage and sculpture. He had his first solo exhibition
last year and has participated in group exhibitions in Manila since
2010.
Yuji Maruyama is born in Japan in 1978 and majored in design at the
University of East Asia (Japan). He draws, paints, makes T-shirts,
designs, and plays music. His works are very colorful and based on
strange and funny creatures. He has been influenced by a mixture of
cultures. He has created artwork for music CD albums and been in solo
and group exhibitions including the Fukuoka Art Museum.
Hazel Lee Santino was born 1989 in New York, and raised inEureka, CA.
She is currently completing undergraduate degrees in Illustration and
Literature at Parsons the New School for Design in New York. Hazel is based in Queens , New York.
Paula Searing was born in 1989 in New York. In 2011, she graduated from Parsons The New School for Design with a BFA in Illustration. Her work is influenced by practices in both contemporary comics and toy theater. Paula has been exhibited with Westgasfabreik in Amsterdam, Pictoplasma in Berlin and Part-Time Studios in Philadelphia. Paula is based in Philadelphia but is currently living and working in Monroe, New York.
